ABOUT THE BOOK This is the first full-length biography of Edmond Rostand to be published in English. Written for those who love Cyrano de Bergerac, it throws new light on the origins of his most famous play, and reveals how Rostand expressed his own character and ideals in his heroes, especially Cyrano. This book also introduces readers to his other plays, such as Chantecler, thought by some to be his masterpiece. Readers will discover a sensitive, modest poet, overwhelmed by the demands of his fame, but determined, in spite of suffering from periods of depression, to fulfil what he saw as his life’s work, inspiring others with his own idealistic enthusiasm. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sue Lloyd was born in Keynsham, England, and studied at Bristol University. After teaching in East Africa, she returned to England, settling in Norfolk. Here she researched her Master’s degree on Cyrano de Bergerac (University of East Anglia, 1977), which revived her longstanding interest in Edmond Rostand. In 1982, her new edition of Roget’s Thesaurus for Longman, the first for twenty years, became a world best-seller. A Penguin edition followed, along with contributions to dictionaries and other wordbooks. After a further period in East Africa, she now lives in Southwest England.
